![]() The Oxford Creamery in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, on Buzzards Bay. Wherever two or more New England seafood enthusiasts gather, arguments erupt over where to find the best fried clams. All serious contenders are in coastal Massachusetts of course. Is it Woodman's in Essex? The Clam Box in Ipswich? Both are good. Neither is in the same league as The Oxford Creamery. They serve the best fried clams in the United States. Without question. Pick up a pint and a chocolate frappe and you'll be transported. I once flew from Banjul, Gambia, to JFK, caught a flight to Boston and drove directly to the Oxford Creamery. It was the best part of the trip. |

If you're going to be in Washington, D.C. for the inauguration and are planning on eating, you're in luck. The city has far more good restaurants than its reputation suggests. The oldest, and still one of the best, is Martin's Tavern on Wisconsin Avenue in Georgetown, serving interesting people since 1933. JFK wooed his wife there. Whittaker Chambers met with Alger Hiss in a back booth. You can picture it all, and taste Washington in every bite. Plus the food's not bad. |

The Filson briefcase (style number 257) made by the C.C. Filson Company of Seattle. Let’s say you're one of the nine frequent fliers left in America who, for reasons of aesthetics and dignity, refuses to buy one of those horrible black nylon rolling suitcases. This masterpiece of simplicity will take your laptop, dopp kit, reading material, a change of clothes and two bottles of water, and still fit under your seat. I haven't checked a bag since I got one. (Actually, I haven't checked a bag since 1983, but this helps.) It’s not cheap, but it will outlive you. And it’s pretty good-looking. Best of all, it doesn't have wheels. |

Now that the election's over, you can move your stack of Foreign Affairs and Congressional Quarterlys to the kindling pile, and resume reading for pleasure. For that, I recommend the late George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman series. There are 12 novels in all, but you'll wish there were three dozen. So good, I tried to name my son Flashman, before my wife intervened. Now that she's read the series, she regrets stopping me. They're that good. |

If you're planning to head south this winter to fly fish—and you ought to—pick up one of the new Sage Bass rods. Designed for largemouth, they're perfect for redfish, baby tarpon, barracuda, and probably bonefish as well, though I haven't tried that yet. They'll throw a big fly a long way in a strong wind with nice control. They're great looking, and they're only $350, line included. In all, the greatest advance in fly rods since graphite. |
