November 22: 8 Best Moments from Sunday Talk
Mitch McConnell throws cold water on heath care reform, Jerry Springer waxes poetic about Oprah, and Liz Cheney wants to look beyond Sarah Palin. That and more in our Sunday roundup.
Mitch McConnell to Dems: Don't Your Hold Breath on Passing Reform Bill
It's the morning after a big win for Democrats on health reform and a chorus of voices in the GOP are already trying to bring them down. Sen. Mitch McConnell's take on CNN’s State of the Union: the bill will only pass if Democrats are "hell bent" on ignoring Americans.
New Mammogram Guidelines? Ignore Them
After all of the confusion over a new study that suggested women should not undergo regular mammograms until they are 50 years old, Dr. Bernadine Healy, the former director of the National Institutes of Health, drops a bombshell on Fox News Sunday. She says if you don’t ignore the guidelines, more women will die.
Liz Cheney: There Are More Important Issues Than Sarah Palin
In the final moments of This Week with George Stephanopoulos, the panel is asked what it makes of Sarah Palin’s book tour. Liz Cheney has the last word, saying “whether we walk away from Afghanistan in defeat matters much more in the long-term than how many books anybody sells.”

According to Sen. McConnell the American people want health care reform, but they don't like the Democratic bill now being considered. I would like to hear him contrast it with the bills the Republicans put forwarded during their 12 years of controlling both houses of Congress. Seriously, it is clear the Republicans only goal is to stop any health care reform from happening at all. Any attempt by them to portray themselves as caring about improving the system and reducing the number of uninsured is another exercise in fiction that they are so good at.
Alonzo
Exactly. What have the Republicans done for health care reform in the last 30 years?
georgeWBushwack
repub. tried to get healthcare reformed previously but were stopped by dems; repubs. put through the drug reform for medicare. repubs want REFORM - dems seem to miss the point - it is how the reform is pursued. do you want higher taxes? do you want higher premiums? why does the reid bill not really take effect until 2014? because it's after obama runs in 2012 - yet immediately your taxes and premiums will go up. repubs have been shut out - remember the locked door? this is purely politics by the dems - it is not true reform that will help the american people. and by the way if you look back in history, medicare and medicad were bipartisan whereas this cr*P is only for the dems.

Democrats have 2000 of pages of contradictions that they will have to explain over the coming weeks. Also, once the CBO fog clears, and everyone realizes that this Bill will raise taxes and premiums for just about everyone over the poverty line, while reducing the quality of their health care, all hell will break lose.

You are entitled to your opinion but not your own facts. Please cite your references for these wild claims. Instead of advancing the talking points of the R's cite substantiated facts. Thanks...I respect your opinion, but thats all that is opinion...The republicans said similar smears and fearmongering when Clinton proposed the tax increases of 1993....all we got was a balanced budget (with assistance from R's) and sustained gdp growth and low unemployment in fact full employment.
neverlate
They are not opinions, but facts:
1. Subsidies will be payed for through:
a. taxes on Income
b. taxes on what are called "cadillac plans"
c. taxes on a variety of medical devices and procedures
Additionally:
The increased demand for scarce medical services can only drive up cost (supply and demand), and items like the "doctor fix" and the inevitable lack of back bone by the politicians (do you really believe they are going to cut medicare?) will have to be payed for some how.
As far as contradicitions are concerned - see George Stephanoupolis interview with Waxmen - ro whatever her name is - he pulled one right out of the Bill.

I'd just like to thank neverlate's republican party for striving so hard to improve the health care system over the last 30 years.... what's that?.... they have consistently backed the insurance companies against health care for all?.... Sorry, my mistake.
SensiStar
Neverlate: You don;t have to worry about paying taxes on the plan.
1.You don't make enough.
2.You don't own a Cadillac plan.
I'm so glad Republicans are so concerned about paying for things.
The two wars the guy you voted for have to be paid for.
The medicare part D plan has to be paid for.
The two trillion dollar Bush Tax Cut has to be paid for.
Your taxes are going up for things that did not help your life one bit.
Someone has to pay for the lies of the Bush years.
What you still waiting for the Iraqi Oil to pay for the Iraq war.
I would gladly pay higher taxes to have the entire country insured.
You supported 6 trillion in spending with nothing to show for it and no way to pay for it.
You sound insane.

I frequently read books of 2,000 pages in a week. Sometimes Bills are so big they require several boxes to carry and assistants split them into pieces to read then provide the Legislator a synopsis. Government is complicated and I hope that it is detailed.
My redneck brother-in-law repeated the FOXism "I don't want to pass a bill I haven't read" To which I said; Oh! Spend all your time reading pending legislation do you? What else have you read? I'm sure you know the answer.
Back on subject. The CBO found that the House version saves money and this is very close. And yes this will cost you money...a handfull of change or a few dollars. Less than a Happy Meal. You'll only realized how much when you're out of work got Cancer and selling your house after everything else. Gosh for the price of a shovel I could have had access to insurance, a shame
neverlate
You should stop smoking that stuff
LeftCoastRightBrain
So...spending vasts amounts of money (and the CBO cost estimates are always low as they assume best case scenarios) will save money?

As a Canadian it is very humorous to hear you rail about taxes. Tax is just a word. What is the difference between a very high private health care tax and a much lower government health care tax?
At least my government health care tax doesn't pay for the yachts of private health care insurance executives.
I guarantee you I'll never go broke paying for my health care.
You Americans might want to look into getting private Police forces and private fire depts. That way when you call 911 the different private police organizations could bid on your emergency.

As an American it is very humorous to hear you rail about
the American Healthcare system,
when certain Canadian cities have a Patient LOTTERY system
to see who's LUCKY enough to meet with specialists.

So your saying America can not do what every Western Democracy has managed to do?
I think America will have no problem at all, perhaps i believe in America more than you?
If England can do it rebuilding after WWII i am sure America can

Re Jerry Springer. Jerry did try to do something valuable with his life by running for Ohio senator in 2004, I believe. Unfortunately, his entertainment past could not be overcome. He really would have made a tremendous senator.

Howard Kurtz, respected journalist interviews Jerry Springer.
Maybe we are the Roman empire ?

Jerry Springer: The Musical qualifies as something meaningful doesn't it? Stewart Lee is genius!

The more irritated they get, the more we know we are on the right path. Nothing better than squirming Republicans. They just can't stand that we are going to beat them at their own game. Reconciliation, here we come!
AlanD2
I'm still hoping we can get the 60 voted necessary to break the Republican filibuster and bring the final Senate bill to a vote. If we can do this, we only need 50 votes to pass the bill.
I'd hate to see it go to reconciliation - although George W. Bush used it a number of times - because there are limits on the kinds of bills for which this process may be used.
LeftCoastRightBrain
Good luck with that.
No, you still need 60 votes to pass this turkey.

Is this article about: there's nothing on TV worth watching.
SCMax101
Interesting, Meet The Press Today was the best it has been in weeks this morning. I'm surprised its not here.
altlic
About time they had a decent show.
ImNoPUNK
Hey SCMax101...
You have to scratch your head and wonder sometimes, how it's more important for TDB to have us read an earlier thread by a British man with a French surname... than it would for us to hear what 4 Senators said on Meet the Press today ...... One can only surmise, today's Meet the Press is absent form this story line cause it won't help advance the agenda of TDB.

Why is Liz Cheney appearing on so many of these shows? Other than perhaps obtaining immortality as the result of being demonspawn, what are her accomplishments.
To the righties, please explain this in the context of the allegedly lefty-biased media. When true lefties start appearing regularly on the news channels' Sunday shows (not even worrying about Fox Entertainment's Sunday show) to counterbalance this nutjob, I'll re-evaluate the alleged biases.
CArvidson
heyitstodd - I'm with you! What is it with Liz Cheney? I look around that table of commentators and can only ask, Liz who? It's a sure sign there are too many political talk shows when they have to go trolling for the children of has beens.
Mauiboy
Liz Cheney said, "Our weak hand is our own doing," in reference to Obama's trip to Asia. How quickly the GOP forget that by putting two wars on our credit card, they have forced our President to go hat in hand to our creditors. The Dems are putting together a health care plan that is revenue neutral, something the GOP should have done under Bush.
AlanD2
Right, Mauiboy. George W. Bush added $5 trillion to our national debt all by himself. Medicare Part D - an unfunded pharmaceutical industry giveaway passed by Republicans - costs us more than the current health care reform proposal would.
Caradog
Liz Cheney: stop talking about the snow bunny from Alaska, and let's get back to The War! Guy stuff - real stuff!
I know stone-cold jealousy when I see it. Welcome to Ronald Reagan Junior High School.
JeffreyinLA
The real story here is the win, not the long term impact or even the final contents of the bill. The Democrats will hold their bragging rights -- and keep repeating them ad nauseum -- even though the plan sounds like another big government, nanny state, speacil interest bonanza. Will it improve health care or help drive down the cost. Not bloody likley.
AlanD2
JeffreyinLA: I suspect you are right. Regardless of what is in the bill, if it passes it will doubtless be amended over the years that follow, just like Social Security and Medicare were.
neverlate
You are rigth Frenchy. Social Security started out as a minor subsidy to widow's of victims of black lung desease and turned into the retirement plan for the fatest generation.
AlanD2
I'm glad you mentioned France, neverlate. It's never too late to remind you that France has the best health care system in the world.
Not only that, but they pay only half as much as we do per person. You'd think we would be smart enough to follow their example, saving us $1 trillion a year in health care costs.
But I guess conservatives don't care about fiscal responsibility any more now than they did during the George W. Bush administration, when they added $5 trillion to our national debt.

I know this will only add fuel to the fire but how about if I just take care of myself and you do the same. Then all these uninsured I keep hearing about could be taken care of by Obamason. You and I wouldn't have anything to fight about. Whaddayasay???
nortonclybourn
Just make sure you don't get sick and don't get in an accident. See? It's so simple. Those people with heart disease, they shouldn't have chosen to get sick. The ones with genetic illnesses--they are weak, and should be weeded out by the Invisible Hand of the Free Market. If you step outside and slip on the stairs and break your leg, you could be bankrupted, but it would be your fault.
Thank you.
